Lifevision Chandigarh manufacturer of hard gelatin capsules in India supplies capsules to the pharmaceutical sector, which are then filled in a separate process. Before going into the step-by-step method required for the stringent quality control in the production of gelatin capsules, let's take a closer look at the raw materials that go into making hard gelatin capsules.
India is one of the major manufacturers of pharmaceutical products in the world. The increasing requirement of hard gelatin capsules is evident from the above statement. As a WHO-GMP certified Third Party Manufacturing partner located in Chandigarh, India, Lifevision is well placed to cater to this market.
Hard gelatin capsules are solid dosage forms that contain one or more drugs and/or inactive substances inside a small shell. They are made mostly of gelatin and have two parts: a body that holds the drug and diluent and a cap that is about half the length of the body. Most capsule products produced today are made from firm gelatin. The use of hard gelatin capsules in the preparation of solid dosage forms is considered to be approximately ten times higher than that of soft gelatin capsules.
Lifevision Chandigarh is a company that uses the industry-standard dip-coating method. This can basically produce up to 150,000 capsules per hour on automated filling lines:
Preparation of Gelatin Solution - Gelatin solution is prepared by dissolving the gelatin in demineralized water at 60–70°C. The colorants and plasticizers are added to the gelatin solution, and the mixture is degassed.
Dip-Coating - Pre-greased stainless steel pins are dipped into the gelatin solution. Timings determine shell thickness, which averages 100-150 microns.
Rotation - Rotating the coated pins by 180° provides even distribution of the gelatin on the pins, avoiding pooling at the end.
Drying - Pins are put into kilns that control the levels of humidity in order to achieve a 12-16 percent moisture content.
Stripping and trimming - Stripped pins are then cut to specific sizes and shapes.
Assembly - The body and cap are brought together by telescoping and are pre-closed with locking rings for tamper-resistant seal.
Printing & Packaging - The capsules are printed with the product details on them and are stored under special conditions.
Gelatin makes up a major portion of the hard gelatin capsule shell. In addition to gelatin, it may also contain substances such as plasticizers, colorants, opacifying agents, and preservatives that either help form the capsules or increase their functionality. Depending on storage conditions, the water content in hard gelatin capsules can range from 12 to 16 percent. Here are some of the steps that are followed in the manufacturing process of hard gelatin capsules -
Gelatin - The most popular and widely used substance used to make hard capsule shells is gelatin. It is a collective term for a mixture of purified protein fractions obtained from collagen taken from animal skin, white connective tissue, and bones by irreversible hydrolytic extraction.
Plasticizer - Plasticizers are given to gelatin to make the polymer more malleable and reduce its hardness. Glycerin and polyhydric alcohol are typical examples of plasticizers. Water, which is naturally found in gelatin, is also an excellent plasticizer.
Colorants - Hard gelatin capsules are usually colored to improve their visual properties and serve as a way to differentiate between different products. The use of dyes must comply with all legal requirements in the countries where the product will be marketed.
Opacifying agent - Clear gelatin can be made opaque by adding an opacifier. Opaque capsules may be used to protect them from light or hide the contents.
Preservative agents – Preservatives used to be added to hard capsules as an in-process aid to prevent microbial contamination during production. Manufacturers that used to comply with GMP requirements in their facilities no longer use them.

The hard gelatin capsule is composed of gelatin (which comes from collagen in animals), plasticizers such as glycerin, dyes, and an opacifier such as titanium dioxide. The moisture content in the shell must be between 12 to 16% w/w.
The former consists of two parts and contains dry powder or dry granules at 12-16% moisture content. The latter contains liquid medication at around 30% moisture content in one piece. In the pharmaceutical industry, hard gelatin capsules are much more popular than soft gelatin capsules. Lifevision Chandigarh produces both kinds. Check out our Soft Gelatin Capsules range.
